It usually involved finding really archaic and low-frequency words. The rules are pretty simple: Each day offers up seven letters arranged in a honeycomb shape (honeycomb, spelling BEE, somebody on the Times design staff got a buzz out of that). This is incredibly difficult to do, for the reasons I mentioned. If you get every word, you earn the title of Queen Bee. So being able to call it a perfect pangram is something of a consolation prize, I suppose. The irony then is that a perfect pangram, aka bingo word, is the lowest scoring pangram one can find. You can usually get to Solid or Nice without too much extra effort. NYT Spelling Bee does not make the distinction that’s Shunn’s Spelling Bee Solver does. The jump from Amazing to Genius is by far the hardest to make. On the road to becoming a Spelling Bee Genius, players work their way through several levels: Beginner, Good Start, Moving Up, Good, Solid, Nice, Great, and Amazing. Words must contain at least 4 letters and include the center letter. Words that are primarily not English words seem to also be excluded. Game rules: Create the maximum number of words using 7 letters from the hive. Starting with five-letter words, players receive one point per letter. With Genius level sometimes being over 200, you’ll never get there only with four-letter words. At a minimum, a word must have at least four letters. In addition, offensive words tend to not be included. The New York Times Spelling Bee has a pretty simple scoring system. I’ve found words that are only proper nouns, tend to not be included.
